Core Plot & Synopsis

The story is set in the year 2040, twelve years after a massive, apocalyptic battle in Metropolis. During that fateful day, a desperate Dick Grayson activated a device that neutralized 90% of the Earth's metahuman population, stripping heroes and villains alike of their superpowers.

In this new status quo, superpowers are completely outlawed, and anyone exhibiting them is forced to take a power-dampening inhibitor drug or face being frozen in stasis. Dick Grayson is no longer a superhero; he is now the high-ranking Commander of The Crusaders, a heavily armed government task force dedicated to hunting down underground, unregistered metahumans.

The premier issue brilliantly sets up Dick's seemingly perfect life. He is a celebrated public hero, a loving father raising his young son, Jacob, and is even dating Kate Kane (Batwoman). However, the narrative takes a shocking turn in the final pages. While playing with his father, young Jacob accidentally manifests powerful, glowing kinetic abilities inherited from his mother (who is revealed to be Starfire). The issue ends on a massive cliffhanger as Dick realizes the totalitarian system he built is about to hunt down his own son.
