Nomad # 1, published in November 1990, is the first issue of a four-part miniseries from Marvel Comics that explores the darker, more violent path of Jack Monroe, who takes on the Nomad mantle with a new, grittier approach to fighting crime.

The story, titled "The Big Fall Apart," centers on Jack Monroe's decision to abandon the noble methods of Captain America and become a more proactive, unsparing vigilante, a tonal shift that aligned with the grittier comic trends of the era.

  • A Darker Nomad: After a period of disillusionment, Jack Monroe gives up his former Bucky identity and the traditional superhero costume, opting for a dark outfit, trench coat, sunglasses, and a shotgun, symbolizing his cynical new outlook on justice.
  • The Case: The plot is initiated by the shooting of a young woman who works at a company called Cyberoptics. This leads Nomad on a cross-country investigation into the seedier side of crime, including a Miami drug lord named Umberto Safilios and a new type of cybernetic gun.
  • Conflict with Captain America: The original Captain America (Steve Rogers) appears in the issue and is immediately concerned with Jack's methods and his new, violent approach. The two argue, with Nomad feeling patronized and arguing that he is addressing the "little people" issues that Captain America's global threats ignore.
  • The Commission's Involvement: The issue ends with the Super-Powers Commission ordering Captain America to bring in his former partner, labeling Nomad a threat to national security.
  • Writer: Fabian Nicieza
  • Penciler: James Fry III
