Original Sin # 1 (May 2014) is the start of a major Marvel murder mystery event, beginning with the gruesome discovery of Uatu the Watcher's corpse on the moon, leading Nick Fury to assemble different teams of heroes to investigate the crime. The core of the mystery is that the Watcher's eyes, which contain all the secrets he has ever witnessed, have been stolen.

The issue kicks off the investigation into the unprecedented murder of Uatu, a cosmic being who has observed all events on Earth for decades without interfering.

  • The Discovery: Thor is the first to find the scene of the crime when drops of blood hit his face while he is flying. He descends to the moon to find the Watcher's base ransacked and Uatu's body with a bullet hole in the head and eyes gouged out.
  • Nick Fury is Called In: Captain America, along with Wolverine, Black Widow, and the retired, original Nick Fury, arrive on the moon. Captain America asks the veteran spy to lead the investigation, a request Fury reluctantly accepts, warning that it will lead them into very dark places.
  • Forming the Teams: Fury immediately begins assembling various unlikely teams of heroes to investigate different leads, from the depths of the ocean to the far reaches of space:
    • Doctor Strange and the Punisher
    • Black Panther, Emma Frost, and Ant-Man (Scott Lang)
    • Moon Knight, the Winter Soldier, and Gamora
    • Spider-Man and the Thing (who were already dealing with a Mindless One in New York that was altered by the Watcher's eye)
  • The Motive: The main question driving the investigation is not only "Who shot the Watcher?" but also "Who now holds the Marvel Universe's darkest secrets in their hands?" The stolen eyes, which hold countless hidden truths, are the primary focus of the manhunt, and the issue sets the stage for the secrets to be unleashed.
