Prime # 1, released by Malibu Comics in June 1993, is the launch of the flagship character for the Ultraverse imprint. It was one of the debut titles that established the shared universe, introducing a character who would become the most powerful—and physically confusing—hero in the Malibu lineup.
The series follows the difficult dual life of Kevin Green, a normal 13-year-old boy.
-
The Incident: During the global "Jumpstart" event that granted powers to millions of people, Kevin gains the ability to transform into an adult, ultra-powerful superhero named Prime.
-
The Transformation: Unlike a typical "Captain Marvel" transformation, Kevin doesn't just change form; an adult, superhuman body of pure energy manifests around him. His young mind is trapped within this powerful new form, resulting in a physically capable hero who nonetheless reacts and thinks with the hormonal, often irresponsible mindset of a teenager.
-
The Conflict: The first issue explores Kevin's struggle to control his transformations, balance heroism with everyday life, and deal with the immediate physical changes. He is effectively two separate people in one body, constantly vying for control.
The comic leans heavily into the signature muscular, high-action style popular in 1990s comics.
-
Writers: Gerard Jones and Len Strazewski.
-
Pencilers: The legendary Barry Windsor-Smith provided the art for the first issue and several subsequent ones, giving the character a distinctive look.
-
Inkers: John Floyd.
