Shadowhawk #1, published by Image Comics in May 1993, begins Volume 2 of the series. This issue is a crucial turning point, as the original Shadowhawk, Paul Johnstone, is hospitalized with HIV, and a new, significantly darker character takes up the mantle.
Story Synopsis: "To Bear the Brunt"
The story picks up the threads from the first volume's conclusion:
- A Hero Falls: The original Shadowhawk, Paul Johnstone, is in the hospital, terminally ill with HIV contracted from a blood transfusion after his previous battles. He is unable to continue as a hero.
- The Second Incarnation: A second, unnamed man (a lawyer by trade) is inspired by the original hero's vigilantism but takes a much more brutal approach to justice. He creates a new, all-black Shadowhawk costume.
- Brutal Justice: The new Shadowhawk's defining characteristic is his method of justice: he maims rather than captures criminals. His brutal actions, including breaking the spines of the people he fights, immediately establish a much grittier tone for the series.
- The Introduction of Vendetta: The issue introduces Vendetta, a new and powerful antagonist who becomes the primary villain for this volume.
