Marvel's Siege # 1 (January 2010) is the opening chapter of a four-issue event that serves as the climax to the "Dark Reign" era. It depicts Norman Osborn’s decision to lead a full-scale military invasion of Asgard, which was then hovering over Broxton, Oklahoma.

The issue focuses on the manipulation and political maneuvering used to justify an illegal war against the Norse gods:

  • The Conspiracy: Loki manipulates Norman Osborn, head of H.A.M.M.E.R., into believing Asgard is a threat to national security.
  • The Inciting Incident: To provide a public justification for the attack, Loki and Osborn frame the Asgardian warrior Volstagg for a tragedy at Soldier Field in Chicago. During a orchestrated fight with the U-Foes, a massive explosion occurs, killing thousands of innocent civilians.
  • The Invasion: Despite the President of the United States explicitly ordering him to stand down, Osborn leads his Dark Avengers and H.A.M.M.E.R. forces in an all-out assault on Asgard.
  • The First Battle: The Sentry begins the attack by flying through the city's walls. Thor attempts to defend his home but is brutally beaten by the combined forces of the Sentry, the U-Foes, and Osborn in his Iron Patriot armor.
  • The Resistance: The issue ends with the real Captain America (Steve Rogers) watching the televised defeat of Thor, signaling the return of the original heroes to end Osborn's reign.
