Spine-Tingling Spider-Man #1 is the October 18, 2023 premiere issue of a four-issue horror-themed limited series published by Marvel Comics. Written by Saladin Ahmed with haunting, surreal artwork and colors by Juan Ferreyra, the series is widely marketed as one of the scariest and most psychologically intense Spider-Man stories ever told.

(Note: Prior to this four-issue miniseries, Marvel printed a "Spine-Tingling Spider-Man #0" one-shot in September 2023, which collected a 2021 digital Infinity Comic storyline featuring the villain Sleep-Stealer. The October 2023 #1 issue kicks off an entirely new physical-first narrative sequel).

The Plot of Issue #1

The issue starts with Spider-Man engaging in a brutal street fight against Spider-Cide, a grotesque, shape-shifting clone from Peter Parker's past. While Peter manages to survive the encounter, the aftermath plunges him into a living nightmare.

Peter suddenly wakes up completely powerless and physically vulnerable. More terrifyingly, he finds himself trapped in a localized existential void where his entire life has been erased: his closest loved ones, including Aunt May and Mary Jane Watson, have no idea who he is. Stranded, isolated, and losing his grip on reality, Peter must navigate a surreal, gothic, and haunted environment—including an ominous train station populated by blank crowds and a sinister conductor—while desperately trying to figure out what mind-bending horror has taken control of his life.

Creative Style and Elements

  • Visual Presentation: Juan Ferreyra utilizes experimental, continuous panel transitions and atmospheric shifts in color palette (shifting dramatically from bright superhero action to dark, claustrophobic tones) to emphasize Peter's deteriorating mental state and disorientation.
  • Psychological Horror: Rather than relying purely on blood or jump scares, the comic focuses on deep existential dread—specifically Peter's ultimate fears of losing his identity, being entirely alone, and losing the power to protect the people he loves.
