Star Wars: The Last Jedi – DJ – Most Wanted #1, published by Marvel Comics on January 31, 2018, is a canon standalone comic book issue that serves as a direct prequel to the movie Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi.

Written by the creative duo Ben Acker and Ben Blacker, with pencils by Kev Walker, the story chronicles "a day in the life" of the cynical master slicer DJ (portrayed by Benicio Del Toro in the film) immediately before Finn and Rose Tico cross paths with him in a Canto Bight prison cell.

The Plot: "Don't Join"

  • The Setting: The entire narrative takes place in the opulent, corrupt casino playground of Canto Bighton the planet Cantonica, set chronologically in 34 ABY.
  • The Caper: True to his mercenary code of conduct, DJ enters a high-stakes casino with a deceptive agenda. He uses his masterful hacking abilities to embed a digital computer virus directly into his betting chips, effectively tricking the local algorithms into letting him walk away with a massive fortune.
  • The Escape and Betrayal: Naturally, his casino con draws the dangerous attention of the city's corrupt corporate elite and local law enforcement. Rather than engaging in a heroic firefight, DJ effortlessly slips and slides between warring factions, local gangsters, and planetary police. Along the way, he subtly preaches his core philosophy—the galaxy is an endless cycle of self-interested grifters, death merchants, and power-hungry military regimes, so the only rational option is to refuse to pick a side.
  • The Prison Cell Standoff: DJ's luck eventually hits a minor snag when he gets out-maneuvered and locked away in the local detention facility. The final pages loop perfectly into his introductory scene from The Last Jedi, showing him resting casually in the cell right before the Resistance heroes find him.

Creative Team & Aesthetics

  • Writers: Ben Acker & Ben Blacker
  • Artist: Kev Walker
  • Visual Tone: Walker leans heavily into a gritty, street-level noir aesthetic that contrasts beautifully with the glistening, shallow perfection of Canto Bight. It emphasizes the hidden underbelly of the galaxy's ultra-rich war-profiteers.
