Starman # 1, released in October 1994, launched a critically acclaimed 80-issue series written by James Robinson and illustrated by Tony Harris. It introduced Jack Knight, the rebellious son of the Golden Age Starman (Ted Knight), as a new and reluctant hero for the 1990s.
"Sins of the Father"
The story begins with the return of Ted Knight's ancient archnemesis, The Mist, who launches a brutal vendetta against the aging hero's family.
-
The Tragedy: The Mist's son, Kyle, murders Jack’s older brother, David Knight, who had recently taken over the Starman mantle.
-
The Escape: The Mist also attempts to kill Jack, who narrowly escapes by using one of his father’s old gravity rods.
-
The Choice: Despite his disdain for his father's superhero past, Jack is forced to pick up the Cosmic Rod to defend Opal City and protect his father.
-
A New Look: Jack eschews traditional spandex for street clothes, protective goggles, and a leather jacket, establishing a more grounded, "everyday guy" persona.
-
Jack Knight: A collectibles dealer and antique store owner who reluctantly becomes the new Starman.
-
Ted Knight: The original Golden Age Starman and Jack's father.
-
The Mist: The primary antagonist seeking final revenge on the Knight family.
