Strange Adventures # 1, released on March 4, 2020, is the debut of a 12-issue DC Black Label limited series that reimagines the classic Silver Age hero Adam Strange. The series is a darker, mature-rated psychological mystery exploring themes of war, self-deception, and the nature of truth.
Hero or War Criminal?
The story follows Adam Strange, the celebrated savior of the planet Rann, who has retired to Earth with his wife, Alanna, to bask in fame and promote his bestselling memoir, Strange Adventures.
-
The Accusation: While on a book tour, Adam is publicly accused by a fan of committing horrific war crimes against the alien race known as the Pykkts during the conflict on Rann.
-
The Murder: Shortly after the confrontation, the accuser is found murdered by a high-tech alien weapon, turning public and media opinion against Adam.
-
The Investigation: Adam approaches Batman to clear his name, but the Caped Crusader refuses due to their long friendship. Instead, Batman arranges for an objective third party—Mister Terrific (Michael Holt), the "third-smartest man in the world"—to investigate.
-
The Conflict: The issue ends with the revelation that Mister Terrific's search for the truth will force him to choose between saving Adam Strange or saving the world.
The series features a unique artistic structure to represent Adam's dual lives:
-
Writer: Tom King, known for Mister Miracle and The Vision.
-
Earth Artist: Mitch Gerads illustrates the "present-day" Earth sequences with a realistic, gritty, and grounded style.
-
Rann Artist: Evan "Doc" Shaner illustrates the flashback sequences of the war on Rann with a cartoony, idealized Silver Age aesthetic.
-
Format: A 40-page, full-color DC Black Label comic.
-
Awards: The series received a 2022 Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story.
