Super Friends #47 is a notable comic book published by DC Comics with a cover date of August 1981. Written by E. Nelson Bridwell with artwork by Romeo Tanghal and Ramona Fradon, the issue holds significant historical value as the final issue of the original Super Friends comic book volume.

The main story, titled "The Demons from the Green Hell," serves as a direct tie-in to the global lore established in the comic series.

Core Plot & Synopsis

The issue kicks off at the Hall of Justice, where the Wonder Twins (Zan and Jayna) and their space monkey, Gleek, are having their birthday celebration interrupted by an emergency distress call.

The call comes from Brazil, where the Brazilian superheroine Green Fury (Beatriz da Costa) has been completely outnumbered while trying to protect the Amazon rainforest. The grandson of a powerful local shaman is abusing ancient mystic powers, unleashing demonic entities onto the region.

Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman join the Wonder Twins to head down to South America. Working alongside Green Fury, the Super Friends coordinate their powers to subdue the rogue mystic forces and restore peace to the jungle.

Why It's a Key Issue

  • The Origin of Green Fury: This issue is highly collectible because it features the official origin story of Green Fury. Later in DC Comics continuity, the character would change her name to Fire and become a mainstay member of the Justice League International.
  • The Last Issue: Marking the conclusion of the 1976–1981 run, this issue wrapped up the era of comic books directly based on the beloved Hanna-Barbera Saturday morning animated series.
  • The Global Guardians Setup: The series routinely introduced international superheroes to team up with the core Justice League members. Shortly after this series ended, many of the international heroes showcased in these pages—including Green Fury—were officially grouped together in standard DC continuity as the Global Guardians.
