Supergirl #1 (2011) is the debut issue of the sixth volume of the Supergirl series, published by DC Comics and released on September 21, 2011. Serving as a key launch title for DC's company-wide "The New 52" continuity reboot, this issue completely resets Kara Zor-El’s origin story, stripping away her prior history to present a raw, high-stakes introduction to the character.

Written by Michael Green and Mike Johnson with standout artwork by Mahmud Asrar, the issue kicks off the celebrated "Last Daughter of Krypton" story arc.

Plot Overview

  • The Crash: A pod containing a teenage Kara Zor-El punches through the Earth's crust and crash-lands in a snowy, remote region of Siberia, Russia.
  • The Confusion: Having been in suspended animation for decades while her ship drifted, Kara awakens entirely disoriented. She possesses no memory of how she arrived, is wearing an unfamiliar uniform, and initially believes she is merely experiencing a vivid dream.
  • The Awakening: As Earth's yellow sun begins to rise, Kara is suddenly and painfully overwhelmed as her superpowers activate for the first time. Her super-hearing floods her mind with global noise, and a sudden emotional burst triggers a destructive wave of heat vision.
  • The Conflict: Terrified and unable to speak the local language, Kara is immediately surrounded and attacked by a squad of Russian military troops utilizing advanced, mecha-armored exo-suits. She uses her burgeoning super-strength to defend herself and fight her way through the forces.
  • The Cliffhanger: Just as the battle escalates to its peak, Superman arrives on the scene to intervene, setting up a tense, skeptical first meeting between the cousins in the subsequent issue.
