Supergirl and Team Luthor #1 (also known as the Supergirl/Lex Luthor Special) is a 64-page, prestige-format one-shot comic book published by DC Comics and released on March 4, 1993 (featuring an April 1993 cover date). Written by long-time Superman architect Roger Stern, this special issue serves as an important world-building chapter during the iconic "The Death of Superman" era.

The book highlights the Matrix version of Supergirl and her complex, highly manipulated professional partnership with Lex Luthor II.

Plot Overview

  • The Pitch: In the chaotic aftermath of Superman's fatal battle with Doomsday, street crime in Metropolis skyrockets. Lex Luthor II pitches a corporate solution to the Metropolis City Council: grant his privately funded, heavily armed tactical security group—Team Luthor—official police powers to protect the city.
  • The Heroine: Meanwhile, Supergirl (Matrix) spends her days clearing structural rubble and saving civilian survivors, all while sharing her profound grief over Superman's death with Lois Lane.
  • The S.T.A.R. Labs Heist: A group of high-tech terrorists infiltrates the cybernetics department at S.T.A.R. Labs, attacking Dr. Kitty Faulkner and attempting to steal advanced technology.
  • The Setup: Lex Luthor suits up in high-tech body armor to personally lead Team Luthor alongside Supergirl to repel the attackers. While Team Luthor successfully stops the heist, Lex suffers a broken leg during the skirmish.
  • The Truth: Behind closed doors, Lex reveals to his personal physician, Gretchen Kelley, that the entire terrorist attack was secretly orchestrated by Lexcorp. Lex broke his own leg deliberately to play the martyr, ensuring the public and the city council would fully embrace Team Luthor's corporate police state.
