Supergirl: Rebirth #1 (2016) is a prestige-format, one-shot comic book published by DC Comics and released on August 17, 2016. Serving as the essential prologue to the seventh volume of the mainline Supergirl series, this special introductory issue re-established Kara Zor-El's core status quo for the company's line-wide "DC Rebirth" publishing initiative.
Written by Steve Orlando with pencil art by Emanuela Lupacchino, the issue intentionally pivots away from the angry, isolated portrayal of the character seen in "The New 52" era. Instead, it updates her story to more closely align with the lighter tone and setup of the contemporary CW live-action Supergirl television series.
Plot Overview
- The Powerless Hero: Following recent battles (specifically the Superman: Doomed arc), Kara's cells have been stripped of solar energy, leaving her completely powerless and yearning to find a way to help people again.
- The Desperate Experiment: Kara strikes a deal with Director Cameron Chase and the D.E.O. (Department of Extranormal Operations). They place her into an experimental, retrofitted Kryptonian pod designed to launch her directly into Earth's sun to jumpstart her stagnant cells.
- The Phantom Rift: As the rocket blasts off from the D.E.O. ghost site, its experimental Phantom Drive accidentally punches a localized hole directly into the Phantom Zone.
- The Kryptonian Werewolf: Slipping through the dimensional crack is Lar-On, an ancient Kryptonian who was quarantined by Kara's biological father, Zor-El, centuries prior. Suffering from an alien strain of lycanthropy triggered by Red Kryptonite, Lar-On turns into a massive, rampaging werewolf the moment he sees Earth's moon, tearing into the D.E.O. facility.
- The Return of Supergirl: Her rocket successfully reaches the sun and completely regenerates her powers. Hearing the chaos back on Earth with her restored super-hearing, Supergirl flies back to the base at super-speed, subdues the misunderstood Lar-On, and saves her new allies.
- The Dynamic Setup: The issue ends by laying the foundation for her civilian life. She accepts the D.E.O.'s terms to live in National City under the guise of ordinary high schooler Kara Danvers, moving in with her newly assigned foster parents, Jeremiah and Eliza Danvers.
