Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #1 (April 1994)—subtitled "Book One"—is the opening chapter of the highly anticipated prestige-format miniseries published by DC Comics. Taking place roughly a year after Superman's resurrection, this key issue sets the stage for the Man of Steel's ultimate psychological and physical rematch with the monster that killed him.

The Plot: Unleashing the Nightmare

• The Psychological Scars: The story opens with Superman experiencing vivid, paralyzing nightmares of Doomsday. In these dreams, he reverts to a defenseless, terrified child. Realizing he cannot move forward with his life, Clark tells Lois Lane that he must seek out and confront the beast for his own peace of mind.
• The Awakening: Meanwhile, out in deep space, an unsuspecting commercial space freighter discovers the armored, drifting capsule where the Justice League originally exiled Doomsday's body. The crew accidentally breaches the restraints, instantly awakening a fully regenerated, bloodthirsty Doomsday, who massacres them and forces the ship on autopilot toward Apokolips, the hellworld ruled by Darkseid.
• The Return of the Cyborg: Attached to the debris of the space casket is an active tracking device containing the digital consciousness of Hank Henshaw (The Cyborg Superman). Seizing the chaos, the Cyborg reconstructs a brand-new mechanical body out of Apokoliptian technology and plots to conquer the planet alongside the rampaging monster.
• The Distress Call: Superman asks the chronal authority known as the Linear Men to help him track down the monster, but they refuse to interfere. However, back at Justice League headquarters, Superman intercepts a frantic intergalactic distress signal sent by Darkseid's master torturer, Desaad, pleading for help as Doomsday tears through Apokolips' defenses.
• The Climax: Borrowing a Mother Box from the League's liaison, Oberon, Superman deliberately teleports directly into the warzone on Apokolips. The moment he arrives, he is violently ambushed by the newly reborn Cyborg Superman, while a desperate Desaad opens a random boom tube portal, scattering Doomsday to an unknown destination.
