Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #3 (June 1994)—subtitled "Book Three"—is the final installment of the prestige-format miniseries published by DC Comics. The series serves as the definitive rematch between Superman and Doomsday, directly addressing the lingering mysteries surrounding the monster's origins and providing closure to the monumental Death of Superman event.

The Core Plot: The Ultimate Rematch

  • The Upgrade: Shaken by his previous defeat and realizing Doomsday has evolved past his original weaknesses, Superman prepares for a final stand on the planet Calaton. Before the battle, a Mother Box equips the Man of Steel with high-tech armor and advanced weaponry to match the beast's raw power.
  • The Fight: Superman and the cosmic entity Waverider confront Doomsday as he attempts to destroy Calaton's central power core. The battle is incredibly brutal; Doomsday showcases new adaptive abilities, including extendable, razor-sharp knuckle protrusions that easily pierce Superman’s armor and shoulders.
  • The Origin Revealed: While Waverider uses his chronal abilities to temporarily merge minds with Doomsday, he uncovers the monster's tragic history. Doomsday was created hundreds of thousands of years ago on prehistoric Krypton by an alien scientist named Bertron. The baby was repeatedly left to die in the hostile wilderness, cloned, and killed again in an endless cycle of accelerated evolution. This agonizing process made him an unkillable engine of pure hatred directed toward all living things—particularly Kryptonians.
  • The Resolution: Knowing that Doomsday automatically adapts to heal from physical death, Superman realizes he cannot defeat the monster through brute force. Instead, Superman uses Waverider's time-travel device to open a portal and permanently strand Doomsday at The End of Time. Locked in place at the literal twilight of the universe, Doomsday is left completely helpless as the slow, inevitable force of universal entropy consumes him.
