Superman: Endless Winter Special #1 (February 2021) is a notable modern one-shot comic published by DC Comics. Released in December 2020, this issue serves as Chapter 3 of the 9-part crossover event Justice League: Endless Winter.

The Core Plot: Fighting a Global Freeze

  • The Threat: An ancient, cryokinetic entity known as the Frost King has been awakened in the Arctic. He unleashes an extinction-level ice storm and an army of savage ice monsters across the planet.
  • Superman's Struggle: Superman flies across the globe to combat the spreading frozen wasteland. However, the scale of the crisis begins to overwhelm even the Man of Steel. He clears out a snow-covered Metropolis and ensures Lois Lane's safety before being forced to fly out to more desperate areas.
  • The Safe Haven: Exhausted, cold, and physically strained by the relentless global crisis, Clark Kent retreats to his childhood home in Smallville. He seeks the comfort and wisdom of Martha and Jonathan Kent to find the perspective needed to defeat the Frost King.
  • The Twist: It is revealed that the Frost King's awakening was accidentally caused by a drilling corporation digging near the former site of Superman's Fortress of Solitude. The drilling team inadvertently hit remnants of Kryptonian crystals, infusing the Frost King with alien energy.

10th-Century Flashback

Like other chapters in the crossover, this issue contains an overarching backup story revealing the Frost King's original defeat in the 10th century. He was originally fought by an ancient primal Justice League consisting of Black Adam, Swamp Thing, Hippolyta, and a Viking Prince.
