Tales of Asgard # 1 (1983) is a reprint anthology comic that primarily collects classic backup stories originally created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby from the 1960s, offering a retelling of the ancient myths and legends of the Asgardian gods.

The main stories in this issue focus on the fundamental origins of the Norse pantheon and several key events from Thor's early life: 

• The Origin of Asgard: The comic explains the creation myth, introducing the first beings to emerge from the void of fire and mist: the Frost Giant Ymir and the subsequent birth of the first Asgardians, including Buri, Borr, and ultimately, Odin. It details how Odin and his brothers defeated Ymir and established the World Tree, Yggdrasil, and Midgard (Earth).
• Odin Battles Surtur: A story depicting the ongoing conflict between Odin and the fire demon Surtur, including how Surtur was eventually trapped deep within the Earth, providing its heat.
• The Boyhood of Thor: The issue includes several tales of a young, arrogant Thor still striving to be worthy of Mjolnir, including his early skirmishes with Frost Giants, his interactions with a young Loki, and his quest to rescue Sif from Hela, the goddess of death.

• Harokin & the Warlock's Eye: The 1983 release also begins a multi-part story arc (which continues into subsequent issues of this reprint series) where Thor and the Warriors Three travel to Muspelheim to recover the Warlock's Eye from the villain Harokin. In this segment, Thor defeats Harokin in combat and impersonates him to retrieve the Eye.
