Teen Titans #23.1: Trigon #1 (2013) is a special tie-in issue titled "Heart of Darkness". Released in September 2013, it was part of DC Comics' company-wide "Villains Month" event during The New 52 era. This issue completely replaces the standard Teen Titans storyline for the month to deliver a dark, standalone origin story for the demonic entity Trigon.

Key Storyline Points

  • The Origin of Evil: The plot begins in another universe where a trio of god-like entities known as "The Divine" attempt to eliminate all evil by sealing it inside a powerful artifact called the [Heart of Darkness](1.1.5, 1.2.1).
  • Trigon's Ascension: The Divine attempt to sacrifice Trigon—who at the time was just an ordinary interdimensional sorcerer—to the artifact. The plan backfires drastically; Trigon absorbs the artifact's concentrated malicious energy, transforming into a supreme being of absolute cosmic evil.
  • Interdimensional Conquest: Now powered by pure malice, Trigon launches a devastating campaign across dimensions, enslaving multiple worlds. To conquer a new reality, he takes a female native of that world as a mate to sire an heir, using the offspring as a living vessel to transport his physical form into that realm.
  • The Target is Earth: After deeming his three sons failures, Trigon turns his attention to a human woman from Earth named Arella. She gives birth to his daughter, Raven, who becomes the key catalyst for his intended invasion of Earth.

Creative Team

  • Writer: Written by legendary comic book writer Marv Wolfman—the character's original co-creator from the 1980s.
  • Artist: Illustrated by Cafu.
  • Cover Artists: Featuring artwork by Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira, famously sold as a special 3D lenticular motion cover.
