The New 52: Futures End # 1, published on May 7, 2014, is the official start of a year-long weekly series that examines a dark potential future for the DC Universe. Set five years after the "current" New 52 timeline, it depicts a world reeling from a devastating multiversal war and ill-prepared for an impending technological apocalypse.
The issue follows four parallel narrative paths that establish the dire state of this future reality:
-
Batman Beyond (Terry McGinnis): Arriving from 35 years in the future, Terry travels back to prevent the sentient computer Brother Eye from ever being created. However, due to a temporal malfunction, he arrives five years into the future—missing his target date by seven years—where Brother Eye's rise is already in motion.
-
Stormwatch: The cosmic team is suddenly pulled from the "Bleed" by an unknown force. Their ship is destroyed, and the hero Apollo is vaporized, signaling a massive new threat approaching Earth.
-
Grifter (Cole Cash): Operating in North Carolina, Cole uses a unique new ability to sense and hunt hidden alien infiltrators (Daemonites) that others cannot see.
-
Firestorm: The partnership between Ronnie Raymond and Jason Rusch has completely fractured. Due to Ronnie's refusal to respond to a distress call, they arrive too late to save Green Arrow (Oliver Queen), whose death is discovered at the end of the issue.
