The Silver Surfer / Warlock: Resurrection # 1, published by Marvel Comics in March 1993, is the first issue of a four-part limited series that focuses on Adam Warlock's plan to resurrect the Silver Surfer's lost love, Shalla-Bal, which goes awry and leads to an invasion of demons.
The issue, titled "The Pact," is written and illustrated by cosmic legend Jim Starlin and bridges the gap between major events like Infinity War and Infinity Crusade.
- The Surfer's Anguish: The story opens with the Silver Surfer reflecting on the loss of Shalla-Bal, his former love from Zenn-La, and his deep regret over their separation due to his service to Galactus.
- Warlock's Proposition: Pip the Troll and Drax the Destroyer coerce the Surfer into meeting Adam Warlock on Monster Island. Warlock, now the guardian of the Soul Gem, claims Shalla-Bal is not truly dead but multidimensionally dispersed and that he has a way to resurrect her.
- The Agreement: Desperate to see Shalla-Bal again, the Silver Surfer agrees to Warlock's terms: the Surfer must do a favor for Warlock in the future in exchange for the resurrection attempt.
- A Dimensional Portal: Utilizing the combined power of the Soul Gem, the Mind Gem (held by Moondragon), and the Silver Surfer's Power Cosmic, Warlock attempts to open a portal to the dimension where Shalla-Bal's essence resides.
- Disaster Strikes: The attempt fails unexpectedly. Instead of reaching the correct dimension, the group accidentally opens a "rogue dimensional level," causing a flood of demons to pour out of the gateway, ending the issue on a cliffhanger. Meanwhile, Mistress Death is shown observing the events, deciding not to intervene.
