The Spectacular Spider-Man #169, titled "The Outlaw Trail," was published by Marvel Comics in October 1990. Written by Gerry Conway with art by Sal Buscema, it is the second part of a three-issue crossover arc featuring the Avengers.
Plot Summary
Following a confrontation in the previous issue where an impostor She-Hulk tried to kill him, Spider-Man remains deeply suspicious of the Avengers.
- The Outlaws Assemble: To counter the Avengers, Spider-Man recruits the Outlaws, a group of reformed villains including Sandman, Puma, Prowler, and Rocket Racer.
- The Investigation: While Spider-Man tracks a mysterious "black cloud of death" he accidentally unleashed, he sends his new allies to investigate. Puma and Prowler infiltrate the Kingpin's headquarters, while Sandman and Rocket Racer visit the city archives.
- Deception: Unknown to the group, the Space Phantom is manipulating events by impersonating the Sandman to attack Rocket Racer, further sowing distrust.
- Avengers' Perspective: Meanwhile, Captain America, Thor, Sersi, Quasar, and the real She-Hulk monitor Spider-Man’s team, concerned by their criminal backgrounds but deciding to wait before intervening.
