The Toxic Avenger # 1 (March 1991), published by Marvel Comics, presents the origin story of the character, a meek janitor named Melvin Junko who is transformed into a monstrous superhero after falling into a vat of toxic waste. He uses his newfound superhuman strength to fight crime and pollution in the fictional town of Tromaville, New Jersey.

"A Hideously Deformed Creature of Superhuman Size and Strength Is Born!"

The issue is a direct adaptation and sanitization of the Troma Entertainment cult classic film's premise, blending superhero action with environmental themes and satire:

  • Melvin's Humiliation: Melvin Junko is a scrawny, dorky janitor at a health club who is constantly bullied and pranked by the club's patrons and staff.
  • The Transformation: After one final, cruel prank that leads him to fall out a window, Melvin plummets into a drum of radioactive chemical waste. In the comic, he is also struck by lightning during this event.
  • Birth of Toxie: The exposure to the toxic waste and the subsequent shock transforms Melvin into the Toxic Avenger, a hideous but super-strong creature who maintains his inner goodness and a basic instinct to destroy evil.
  • First Act of Heroism: His first actions as Toxie involve saving a police officer from a group of thugs, establishing his role as a monstrous but effective hero.
  • The Battle for Tromaville: Driven by a desire for justice, Toxie begins to clean up the corrupt town of Tromaville, taking on criminals, drug dealers, and the corporate entities responsible for the pollution that created him, such as Apocalypse, Inc..
