Ultimate Spider-Man #6 (2001) is a monumental early issue in the groundbreaking Earth-1610 continuity. Written by Brian Michael Bendis and penciled by Mark Bagley, it serves as the pent-ultimate chapter of the seven-part "Power and Responsibility" opening story arc.
The Plot: "Big Time Superhero"
Following the tragic murder of Uncle Ben, a grieving Peter Parker attempts to pull his fractured life back together. In this issue, he quits the school basketball team to dedicate his time to building his classic superhero arsenal. Using his late father’s top-secret adhesive chemical formula, Peter finally perfects and constructs his mechanical web-shooters. He also formally redesigns his proto-suit into the iconic red-and-blue costume.
Meanwhile, the ripples of Spider-Man's first public street-level exploits reach the media. Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson commands reporter Ben Urich and the rest of the newsroom staff to track down and print anything they can uncover about the elusive new wall-crawler.
The climax of the issue brings Peter face-to-face with his very first super-villain. The mutated, hulking Green Goblin (Norman Osborn) targets Midtown High School, detonating an explosion that sets off Peter's spider-sense. Peter quickly changes into his new gear and rushes in to defend his classmates. The chaotic battle takes a horrifying turn when the Goblin overpowers Spider-Man, grabs him, and abducts him into the night sky while muttering a single word: "Parker."
