Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk # 1, first released on December 21, 2005 (with a cover date of February 2006), is the debut issue of a six-part miniseries set in Marvel's Ultimate Universe. Written by Damon Lindelof (co-creator of Lost) and illustrated by Leinil Francis Yu, the comic is famous for its non-linear storytelling and brutal action.

The issue opens with a shocking image: Wolverine awakening in the snowy Himalayas to find that the Hulk has ripped his body completely in half. As Wolverine uses his claws to drag his upper torso up a mountain to retrieve his severed legs, he recalls the events leading to the confrontation:

  • The Mission: After a public "execution" failed to kill Bruce Banner, Nick Fury recruits Wolverine to track and assassinate the Hulk, whose continued existence threatens Fury's own position.
  • The Hunt: Wolverine follows a scent trail—aided by a vial of the Hulk's stool sample provided by Fury—to a remote monastery in Tibet.
  • The Confrontation: Logan finds Banner lounging in a harem of women. The issue concludes with their initial meeting, setting the stage for their violent battle.
  • Writer: Damon Lindelof.
  • Penciler/Inker: Leinil Francis Yu.
  • Colorist: Dave McCaig.
