Uncanny X-Men Annual # 16 (1992) is the second part of the four-part "Shattershot" crossover storyline, which centers on characters from the Mojoverse and features multiple backup stories about the X-Men.
Main Story: "The Masters of Inevitability"
The main story, written by Fabian Nicieza with art by Jae Lee, takes place between the events of Uncanny X-Men #287 and #288.
- Plot: The X-Men's Gold Strike Force (Archangel, Bishop, Colossus, Iceman, Jean Grey, and Storm) is at the X-Mansion, nursing Arize, a mind-wiped visitor and rebel leader from the Mojoverse. Arize is the creator of the bipedal slave race that includes Longshot. A mercenary team from a Mojoverse pirate network, known as the Death Sponsors, attacks the mansion to retrieve Arize to boost their TV ratings. The X-Men defeat the attackers, but not before Arize's memories are restored. He then leaves on his own to learn from Earth to better his own world, leading to some tension within the X-Men over Bishop's extreme methods during the fight.
- Key Characters:
- X-Men (Gold Team): Archangel, Bishop, Colossus, Iceman, Jean Grey, Storm.
- Guest: Professor X, Arize, Mojo II (leader of the pirate network).
- Villains: The Death Sponsors (Cancellator, Deadair, Lead-In, Sweepzweak, Timeslot).
Backup Stories
The annual also includes two additional stories:
- "Angel of Death": Archangel is badly injured while single-handedly battling a group of Mandroid-armored terrorists. As he teeters on the brink of death, he has a vision of a mysterious blue-skinned mutant named Amalgam, who claims to be the "Angel of Death" and reminds him of their first encounter during the Morlock Massacre.
- "The Roots of the Past": Bishop confides in Storm about his difficulty adjusting to the present time and his feelings of being an outsider among the X-Men.
