Wonder Woman: Futures End #1 (published on September 17, 2014) is a standalone one-shot issue that jumps five years into a dark, possible future of the DC Universe. Part of DC’s massive New 52: Futures Endevent, the issue was written by Charles Soule with pencils and inks by Rags Morales.

The Plot

  • The Realm of Korondor: Five years into the future, Diana has fully stepped into her divine mantel as the new God of War following the death of Ares. She is locked in a brutal, seemingly endless fantasy war in the realm of Korondor
  • The Armies of Nemesis: Wonder Woman is leading the souls of the dead (granted to her by Hades) to hold the line against the overwhelming, monstrous armies of Nemesis, the Goddess of Retribution.
  • The Brutal Transformation: Diana has been hardened by years of unyielding slaughter. Her army is outmatched and ill-equipped, and she suffers extreme physical and psychological exhaustion. The battlefield takes a surreal turn when she discovers that previous historical tacticians—including a transformed, monstrous version of Napoleon Bonaparte—have joined Nemesis's forces.
  • The Cliffhanger: Realizing that war is eternal and her enemies are closing in, Diana stops holding back. She fully unleashes her divine energy as the God of War in a massive explosion to wipe out the opposing army. As the smoke clears, she uses her cosmic senses to realize that Nemesis has just consumed Superman's light back in the real world.

Core Themes

  • The Cost of War: Charles Soule uses the story to explore the logical conclusion of making Wonder Woman the God of War. The issue highlights the heavy toll that embracing a title of violence takes on a hero whose core values are historically rooted in love, peace, and hope.
  • Fantasy Slasher Scale: The aesthetic leans away from traditional superhero storytelling and closer to a high-fantasy, Lord of the Rings-style war epic, emphasizing gritty, unrated martial combat.
