X-Men Classic # 74, published in August 1992, is a reprint of the main story from 1983's Uncanny X-Men #170, titled "Dancin' in the Dark". The issue primarily focuses on the dramatic showdown between Storm and Callisto for the leadership of the Morlocks.
- The Duel: Storm challenges Callisto for the leadership of the Morlocks after the underground-dwelling mutants kidnapped Angel (Warren Worthington III). Callisto accepts the challenge on the condition that Storm does not use her weather-manipulating powers during the duel. The two fight fiercely with knives, and Storm ultimately gains the upper hand, stabbing Callisto in the heart. Callisto's life is only saved by the timely intervention of the Morlocks' Healer. Having won the combat, Storm declares herself the new leader of the Morlocks.
- Romance Begins: Elsewhere in the story, Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor go on a date, beginning their romance.
- Rogue's Departure: Rogue, still living with Mystique and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, is shown leaving them to seek out the X-Men. Mystique has a vivid nightmare that foreshadows danger for Rogue and awakens to find her gone.
Like other issues in the X-Men Classic series, this comic includes additional pages and bonus material not found in the original Uncanny X-Men #170 issue. The cover art for this specific issue #74 was created by Adam Hughes.
