Absolute Batman #1 launched the Absolute Universe on October 9, 2024, presenting a reimagined, non-billionaire Bruce Wayne and a darker, more street-level version of the Dark Knight. The new origin story, created by writer Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta, is part of a larger initiative to modernize core DC heroes in a shared, but distinct, continuity.
The Absolute Batman story:
This new origin story dramatically changes Bruce Wayne's backstory to explore what defines him as a hero.
No inheritance: In this universe, Bruce Wayne does not possess a fortune. He comes from a working-class background, and the trauma that sets him on his path to becoming Batman is not the death of two wealthy parents, but a senseless act of gun violence.

A surviving parent: Unlike the classic origin, Bruce's mother survives the attack. Only his father, a public school teacher, is killed. The trauma is shared with other children present at the scene—an event that occurs during a field trip to the zoo.

A new Alfred: With no Wayne Manor to run, Alfred Pennyworth is re-envisioned as an MI6 agent. He returns to Gotham with his own agenda that brings him into contact with the new Batman.

A ruthless hero: This working-class Bruce becomes a more ruthless, physical Batman. His handcrafted gadgets include a bat-cleaver/hammer and a cape with weighted, anvil-like ends.

The Absolute Universe:The Absolute Batman series is the cornerstone of DC's "Absolute Universe" imprint, a new initiative that reinvents classic DC characters and their histories.

Created by despair: The Absolute Universe was formed and influenced by the despair energy of Darkseid after his defeat in the Absolute Power crossover event. This gives the entire universe a bleaker tone.

Hero as underdog: In contrast to the main DC Universe, where heroes are often revered, heroes in the Absolute Universe are outsiders who are feared by the public. Stripped of their usual advantages and resources, they are forced to be underdogs.
