Absolute Martian Manhunter #1, released on March 26, 2025, is a psychedelic reimagining of the character's origin within DC's Absolute Universe. Written by Deniz Camp and illustrated by Javier Rodríguez, the series shifts Martian Manhunter from a traditional superhero to a surreal psychological horror and "psychedelic noir" thriller. 

The Premise

The story follows John Jones, an FBI agent who is a "passenger in his own life"—a workaholic and detached father who has lost all passion for his routine. 

• The Incident: Jones is caught in a traumatic explosion at a coffee shop that should have killed him.
• The Infection: Following the blast, his mind is "infected" or bound to an incorporeal alien consciousness calling itself "the Martian".
• A New Reality: This entity forces Jones to perceive reality in a way that is utterly incomprehensible to the human psyche, filled with vibrant, "psychedelic" smoke and memories of a past life on Mars. 

Unique Features

• Experimental Art: Javier Rodríguez uses an abstract visual language that ignores traditional comic layouts. To design the "Martian" entity, he famously eschewed standard drawings and used modeling clay to create its unique, malleable look.
• Interactive Design: The issue includes "interactive art" where certain pages are designed to be held up to a light source so that colors and images from the following page bleed through, creating a composite image.
• Innovative Lettering: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou uses warped and mirrored lettering to represent the alien's presence and the breakdown of Jones's mental state.
