Absolute Superman # 1 is the debut issue of a 2024 ongoing comic book series from DC Comics' "Absolute Universe" imprint, offering a darker, alternate take on Superman's origin story, written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by Rafa Sandoval. This version of Kal-El fights against corporate exploitation on Earth after witnessing the class struggles on Krypton.

The issue provides a fresh take on the Last Son of Krypton's story, with significant differences from the traditional lore:

  • Kryptonian Caste System: Jor-El and Lara are not esteemed scientists in this version, but members of the lowest social tier, the labor guild. The iconic "S" symbol is not a family crest but the mark of their labor caste.
  • Environmental Destruction: Krypton's destruction is portrayed as the result of an environmental crisis ignored by the ruling Science Guild, despite warnings from Jor-El.
  • A Conscious Kal-El: Unlike the traditional baby Kal-El, this version arrives on Earth as an adolescent who remembers his life on Krypton, which deeply impacts his worldview and actions.
  • A "Working-Class" Hero: On Earth, an adult Kal-El secretly uses his powers to help oppressed workers in dangerous conditions at various Lazarus Corporation-owned facilities around the world, making him an urban legend known as "Superman".
  • Lois Lane's New Role: Lois Lane is introduced not as a journalist, but as an agent/soldier for the adversarial Lazarus Corporation, and she is the one who captures Kal-El at the end of the issue.
  • Limited Powers and AI Suit: This Superman doesn't naturally absorb yellow sun energy. His powers are regulated by an AI-driven Kryptonian suit (named Sol), and he must recharge often, which means he is not as powerful or invincible as the traditional Superman initially.
