Absolute Superman # 1 (released November 6, 2024) is the launch of a new ongoing series in DC's Absolute Universe, a timeline where heroes are born under harsher, more challenging circumstances. Written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by Rafa Sandoval, it reimagines Superman as a "working-class hero" who lacks the traditional support systems of the Fortress of Solitude or the Kent family.
The story introduces a radically different version of Kal-El and his homeworld:
-
A Divided Krypton: In this universe, Krypton is a rigid caste society where a wealthy "Science League" elite exploits a lower "Labor Guild". The iconic "S" on Superman's chest is not the House of El crest but the symbol of the Labor Guild.
-
Working-Class Roots: Kal-El’s parents, Jor-El and Lara, are laborers rather than scientists. They were excommunicated from the elite for their environmental activism.
-
Mission on Earth: Now an adult on Earth, Kal-El acts as a secret activist for the oppressed. The issue follows him as he helps miners in Brazil who are being exploited by the ruthless Lazarus Corporation.
-
The Conflict: Kal-El battles the corporation's enforcers, known as Peacemakers. He wears a living, A.I.-driven suit named Sol that helps regulate his solar energy.
-
The Cliffhanger: The debut concludes with a major twist: Lois Lane is introduced not as a journalist, but as a special agent for the Lazarus Corporation who captures Superman.
-
Solar Power: This Superman is not an unstoppable powerhouse; he has a limited ability to store solar energy and must rely on "red Sun Stone" charges.
-
No Kent Upbringing: It is strongly suggested that Kal-El never met the Kents; the Kent farm is shown in ruins and owned by the Lazarus Corporation.
-
Personality: This version is edgier, angrier, and more isolated, appearing as a "wild boy" with unkempt hair who is often fiercely aggressive when provoked.
