Action Comics #23.1: Cyborg Superman #1 2013 is a standalone comic book published by DC Comics on September 4, 2013, as part of the "Villains Month" initiative during The New 52.

Like the rest of the event, the issue features an intricate, collectible 3D Motion Lenticular Cover that shifts between Superman and the cybernetic skull of Cyborg Superman depending on the angle.

The Shocking Origin Reboot

Written by Michael Alan Nelson with art by Mike Hawthorne, this issue completely rewrote DC history. It completely discarded the classic post-Death of Superman origin of Hank Henshaw and tied the mechanical villain directly into Superman’s family line:

• The Rivalry of Brothers: The comic flashes back to the final days of Krypton. It showcases the sibling rivalry between Jor-El (Superman's father) and Zor-El (Supergirl's father). While Jor-El prepares his famous rocket ships, Zor-El desperately tries to utilize dangerous Brainiac technology to shield Argo City.
• The Deal with Brainiac: Zor-El's family initially survives the planet's explosion on a floating chunk of space rock. However, as environmental life support fails, Zor-El sends his daughter Kara to Earth and sends out a final distress signal to Brainiac to save his remaining people.
• The "Upgrade": Instead of helping, Brainiac takes the dying Zor-El and aggressively strips away his flesh. Brainiac alters his genetic makeup to look like a twisted metal facsimile of his brother's son (Superman) and brainwashes him into becoming an emotionless cosmic scout.

Present-Day Mission

The modern-day framing of the issue follows the newly reborn Cyborg Superman traveling to the alien planet Kampara on a cold quest for "perfection." He puts the alien civilization through a series of dark moral tests. When the population inevitably fails to meet his impossible robotic standards, he brutally obliterates the entire world, ending the comic on a hauntingly isolated note
