Written by Greg Pak with raw, grit-infused artwork by Ken Lashley, the issue completely overhauls General Zod's origin story for The New 52, exploring how a child of scientists became a merciless, war-mongering tyrant.

• The Jungle of Monsters: As a young boy, Dru-Zod travels to the wild, untamed wilderness of Krypton with his scientist parents, who study indigenous alien beasts. When their vessel is brutally attacked by wild predators, his parents are killed, leaving young Zod stranded.
• Survival & The First Sacrifice: Zod survives alone in the dangerous jungle for a full year by developing a fierce, primal connection to the wild. In a dark psychological twist, it is revealed that to buy himself time to escape a massive apex predator, Zod actively chose to betray and sacrifice his own father to the beasts.
• Rescue by the Els: Zod is eventually rescued and brought back to civilization by a young Jor-El and his brother Zor-El. However, having grown up in total isolation, Zod despises the opulence and perceived weakness of Krypton's peaceful society. He becomes a hyper-focused warrior, rapidly climbing the military ranks to become General.

The Treasonous Plot

Zod develops a deep-seated hatred for an alien species known as the Char. Believing that peace is an illusion, Zod secretly orchestrates a false flag operation by engineering a genetic monster that mimics the Char to attack Krypton, forcing the planet into a state of war.

Jor-El ultimately discovers the deception and confronts Zod in his laboratory. Exposed for his treason and warmongering, Zod is arrested by the council and sentenced to eternal banishment within the Phantom Zone. Flanked by his loyal lieutenants Faora and Non, Zod proudly accepts his exile, vowing that he will always be the "monster" Krypton needs. The framing story concludes with a powerless Zod brooding in the void, silently staring at an image of Superman
