American Vampire # 1 (released March 17, 2010) is the debut issue of an ongoing series from DC/Vertigo that reinvented the classic monster by introducing a unique, American-born subspecies of vampire. The issue is particularly notable for featuring dual narratives co-written by series creator Scott Snyder and horror legend Stephen King.
Issue #1 is split between two distinct time periods, showcasing the generational evolution of this new species:
-
Story 1: "Big Break" (Snyder): Set in 1925 Los Angeles, it follows Pearl Jones, an aspiring silent-film actress. Her Hollywood dream turns into a nightmare when she is invited to a party hosted by producer B.D. Bloch, which is secretly a front for ancient European vampires. Pearl is attacked, fed upon, and left for dead in the desert.
-
Story 2: "Bad Blood" (King): Set in the 1880s Wild West, this story provides the origin of Skinner Sweet, a notorious, ruthless outlaw. While being transported by train for trial, Sweet is infected with vampire blood during a chaotic ambush. He becomes the first of a new species: the "American Vampire".
The series introduces the concept that vampire physiology evolves based on the region and era they are born in. The American strain, starting with Skinner Sweet, differs significantly from traditional European vampires:
-
Sunlight Resistance: Unlike their predecessors, American vampires are unaffected by (and even powered by) the sun.
-
Physical Differences: They are faster and stronger, with distinctive features like rattlesnake-like fangs.
-
New Weaknesses: Traditional European weaknesses (like wood) do not always apply, as American vampires have their own unique set of vulnerabilities.
