Aquaman # 1: "Return of the King!" 1991 NM-

Aquaman # 1: "Return of the King!", published in December 1991, launched a four-issue miniseries focusing on a grim, isolated Aquaman who had lost his family and kingdom, as he deals with an Atlantean invasion of the surface world. 

Story Synopsis: "A Small World Incident" 

The issue establishes a new, darker tone for Aquaman, portraying him as an angry and sorrowful hero driven by non-stop action. 

• Atlantis in Turmoil: The story begins with the domed Atlantean city of Poseidonis already in a state of crisis, led by the new King Thesily. They are being subjected to repeated bombardments by submarines from the sovereign nation of Oumland.
• Aquaman's Isolation: Aquaman, having previously resigned from his United Nations position and estranged from Mera, has retreated from public life and is reflecting on his past at Mercy Reef. He notices the local sea life is behaving strangely, indicating a larger problem.
• The UN Response: The invasion becomes public knowledge, but the United Nations is unable to officially rely on the Justice League's aid because their international charter has been revoked. Martian Manhunter and Blue Beetle are seen lamenting their inability to help.
• Black Manta's Involvement: It is revealed that Oumland's Prime Minister is secretly meeting with Black Manta, who is pushing for "Act II" of the strike, indicating his role as a mastermind behind the conflict.
• The Battle and Cliffhanger: Aquaman heads to the twelve-mile disputed area and single-handedly incapacitates several Oumlandian submarines, discovering the attacks were retaliatory. As he speeds toward Poseidonis for answers, an Oumlandian torpedo destroys the city's dome, catching both Aquaman and Lord Vulko in the massive blast.
