Story Synopsis: "Beyond Burnside, Part One" 

Seeking to "up her game" as a hero, Barbara Gordon embarks on a backpacking trip across East Asia to train with elite combat masters. 

  • Arrival in Japan: Her journey begins in Japan, where she hopes to find Chiyo Yamashiro (the retired vigilante known as Fruit Bat) to learn new fighting techniques.
  • The Reunion: While traveling, she accidentally runs into an old friend, Kai, whom she hasn't seen in years.
  • The First Conflict: Their reunion is interrupted by a mysterious, hyper-fast young woman dressed as a schoolgirl who attacks Kai. Batgirl intervenes but is nearly outmatched by the assailant's speed until Chiyo Yamashiro assists her.
  • The Mystery: The issue ends with a cryptic warning from Chiyo that Batgirl must find "the Teacher" to truly understand the new threats she is facing.
