DC Comics released a special "Blind as a Bat" blind bag variant for the Batman #1 issue (2025 relaunch), which contained one of several random foil covers by superstar artists. Rare, randomly inserted chase variants (1:500 and 1:1000) by Jim Lee and Jorge Jiménez are highly sought after by collectors.

Batman # 1 (Volume 4), published by DC Comics on September 3, 2025, is a new era for the character by the creative team of writer Matt Fraction and artist Jorge Jiménez. The story, titled "Vast Colors in the Dark," focuses on a more empathetic Batman and a new status quo for Gotham City.

Main Storyline

The issue serves as a fresh starting point for new readers, while still existing in the main DC continuity after previous storylines. Key plot points include:

  • Killer Croc's Escape The story centers on Waylon Jones, also known as Killer Croc, who has escaped from Arkham Towers. Due to exposure to an unknown "morphotoxin," he is regressing to a more primal but also childlike state.
  • A Kinder Batman Rather than an immediate confrontation, Batman tracks Croc to the Natural History Museum and has a quiet, empathetic conversation with him at the foot of a T-Rex statue, discussing whether people can change.
  • Vandal Savage as Commissioner Vandal Savage has become the new Police Commissioner of the GCPD and introduces "tactical urban combat officers" (robot police) to the force, creating a new conflict for Batman.
  • Jim Gordon's Return Jim Gordon is back as a beat cop, no longer the Commissioner, and is one of the first on the scene of Croc's initial rampage.
  • New Tech and Cliffhanger Batman uses a new blue and gray suit and has a holographic A.I. version of Alfred Pennyworth as a guide. The issue ends on a cliffhanger, with Robin calling Batman for help after being cornered by the new robot police.

Creative Team

The comic is a collaboration between an acclaimed creative team:

  • Writer: Matt Fraction
  • Artist: Jorge Jiménez
  • Colorist: Tomeu Morey
  • Letterer: Clayton Cowles

Jiménez noted the new aesthetic for the series was intended to blend classic and modern elements, including the return of the classic blue and gray Batsuit.
