Batman and Robin #1 (cover-dated August 2009, released June 3, 2009) marks the high-profile launch of the "Batman Reborn" era. Written by Grant Morrison and illustrated by Frank Quitely, it introduced a radical new status quo for the Dynamic Duo following the apparent death of Bruce Wayne in Final Crisis.
A New Dynamic Duo
The series famously inverts the traditional Batman and Robin relationship:
- Batman (Dick Grayson): The original Robin and former Nightwing takes up the mantle of the Bat. Unlike Bruce, Dick is more lighthearted and acrobatic, treating the role as a "performance" to honor his mentor.
- Robin (Damian Wayne): Bruce's ten-year-old biological son, raised by the League of Assassins, becomes the new Robin. He is cold, arrogant, and prone to violence, creating a "dour Robin/cheerful Batman" dynamic.
Plot: "Domino Effect"
The first issue kicks off a three-part story arc where the new team must establish their authority in a chaotic Gotham:
- The Flying Batmobile: The duo makes a grand entrance in a new, high-tech flying Batmobile, chasing a gang led by a villain named Mr. Toad.
- The Circus of Strange: They face a grotesque new group of villains known as the Circus of Strange, which includes characters like Big Top and Phosphorus Rex.
- Professor Pyg: The issue features the first appearance of Professor Pyg (Lazlo Valentin), a twisted scientist who uses "Dollotrons"—mindless, surgically altered humans—to "make everything perfect".
- The Domino Killer: The duo also begins investigating a child abduction linked to a mysterious figure known as the Domino Killer.
