Batman: Curse of the White Knight #1 (or Book One) is the explosive opening chapter of the eight-issue limited series published by DC Comics under its mature Black Label imprint on July 24, 2019. Written and illustrated entirely by Sean Murphy, this book serves as the direct sequel to the critically acclaimed blockbuster Batman: White Knight, taking place in a self-contained alternate reality known as the "Murphyverse".

Plot & Central Conflict

  • The Joker's Revenge: Following the events of the first series, Jack Napier has reverted back to the maniacal Joker. Though locked away inside Arkham, he quickly orchestrates a bloody escape and uncovers an ancient secret hidden deep within the asylum.
  • A Shocking Ancestral Secret: The Joker discovers a dark history regarding the founding of Gotham City dating back to 1685. The narrative flashes back to a historic feud between Edmond Wayne and Lafayette Arkham. The Joker realizes this secret has the power to completely shatter the Wayne family legacy and Batman's legitimacy.
  • Recruiting Azrael: To enact his final plan to run Gotham into the ground, the Joker recruits Jean-Paul Valley (Azrael)—reimagined in this universe as a terminally ill, battle-hardened veteran who believes he is an avenging angel of the Order of St. Dumas. Armed with a flaming sword, Azrael is unleashed to purge the city and destroy Bruce Wayne.
  • Batman's Fragile State: In the present day, Bruce Wayne is still reeling from the psychological damage of the first series and the loss of Alfred. As his allies integrate his heavy mobile armor into Gotham's specialized GTO police task force, Bruce begins to heavily question his methods, his sanity, and his place in Gotham.

Significance & Tone

  • The Murphyverse Mythos: Book One sets the stage for a dramatic rewriting of Batman's origin, changing the Dark Knight's entourage and family history forever.
  • High-Stakes Atmosphere: Because it was published under DC's Black Label, the narrative treats no character as safe, stripping away standard comic constraints for a far darker, high-octane mystery.
