Batman: The Dark Knight (Volume 2) # 1 , published by DC Comics as part of the New 52 Relaunch in September 2011 (with a cover date of November 2011), kicks off the gritty "Knight Terrors" story arc.

Written by Paul Jenkins and superstar artist David Finch, this issue introduces an overarching mystery involving chemically enhanced rogues and a bizarre new figure pulling strings from the shadows.

The Plot: Arkham Ripped Apart

  • The Gala Interruption: The story begins with Bruce Wayne attending a high-society charity gala for the Gotham Police Department, where he shares a dance with Jaina Hudson, a wealthy and seductive global charity director. The peaceful evening is shattered when a high-priority alert flashes from the Arkham Asylum security grid.
  • The Asylum Riot: Donning his cape and cowl, Batman races to the facility only to discover total systemic failure. The high-security cells have been completely opened from the inside, unleashing a chaotic gauntlet of Batman's most lethal rogues—including the Riddler, Professor Pyg, Scarecrow, Mad Hatter, and Clayface—all rioting simultaneously.
  • The Mutation Threat: As Batman fights his way through the madness to restore order, he encounters Two-Face (Harvey Dent). To Batman's horror, Dent has been injected with a highly volatile, experimental new super-steroid. This chemical cocktail combines Bane's Venom strength serum with Scarecrow's Fear Toxin, transforming Two-Face into a hulking, grotesquely muscled behemoth who is completely immune to fear.
  • The Mysterious Puppet Master: While trading blows with the mutated Two-Face, Batman catches a brief glimpse of an enigmatic, costumed woman darting through the asylum's corridors. Dressed in a classic literary ensemble, she vanishes into thin air before he can apprehend her, leaving a trail of questions behind.

Key First Appearance

This landmark comic book issue features the official first appearance of the White Rabbit (Jaina Hudson). She becomes a prominent antagonist throughout the rest of this David Finch run, utilizing incredible agility, speed, and mind-bending illusions to manipulate Gotham's criminal underworld while actively evading Batman's investigative gaze.
