Batman: The Dark Knight Returns #1, originally published in February 1986, is the first of a seminal four-issue miniseries by Frank Miller that redefined Batman for the modern era. Set in a dystopian future where a 55-year-old Bruce Wayne has been retired for a decade, the story follows his violent return to crime-fighting in a Gotham City overrun by the "Mutants" gang.

Plot and Major Characters

The first issue, titled "The Dark Knight Returns," establishes the grim tone and social commentary that became hallmarks of the series.

  • Bruce Wayne's Reawakening: After ten years of retirement triggered by the death of Jason Todd (the second Robin), Bruce Wayne finds himself unable to ignore Gotham's descent into lawlessness. Driven by an internal "beast," he dons the cowl again during a record-breaking heatwave.
  • Harvey Dent/Two-Face: The primary antagonist of the first issue is a supposedly rehabilitated Harvey Dent, whose face has been surgically repaired but whose mind remains fractured. Batman views Dent's dual-nature madness as a "reflection" of his own struggle.
  • Carrie Kelley: This issue marks the first appearance of Carrie Kelley, a 13-year-old girl who, inspired by Batman's return, adopts the persona of Robin.
  • James Gordon: Now 70 years old and nearing retirement, Commissioner Gordon remains Bruce Wayne's closest ally and one of the few moral anchors in a corrupt city.
  • The Joker: After a decade of catatonia in Arkham Asylum, the Joker reawakens upon hearing news reports of Batman's return.

Creative Team and Legacy

The series is credited with ushering in the "Dark Age" of comic books alongside Alan Moore's Watchmen.

  • Creative Team: Written and penciled by Frank Miller, with inks by Klaus Janson, colors by Lynn Varley, and lettering by John Costanza.
  • Innovation: It was one of the first major series released in "Prestige Format"—square-bound with heavy cardstock covers and high-quality paper, moving away from the standard newsprint of the time.
  • Impact: Miller's portrayal of a gritty, older, and more authoritarian Batman moved the character away from the "campy" 1960s image and has influenced every major Batman film adaptation since, including those by Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan.
