Batman vs. Bigby! A Wolf in Gotham # 1 is the first installment of a six-issue miniseries published by DC Comics under its Black Label imprint. Released on September 28, 2021, this crossover event marks the return of characters from the acclaimed Vertigo series Fables.

  • Writer: Bill Willingham (creator of Fables).
  • Art: Brian Level (pencils), Jay Leisten (inks), and Lee Loughridge (colors).
  • Cover Art: Yanick Paquette provided the main cover for issue #1.

In "Chapter One: Bat, Wolf, Worm," Batman is investigating a string of gruesome murders in Gotham City characterized by brute-force entries, bodies ripped to shreds, and bite marks.

  • The Mystery: Forensics suggest the attacker is a giant wolf, but Batman finds normal-sized wolf hairs at the scene, leading him to doubt the "Werewolf of Gotham" rumors.
  • The Confrontation: Batman notices a mysterious, chain-smoking figure following him. Recognizing he is being tailed, Batman violently confronts Bigby Wolf, leading to a scuffle where Batman eventually gasses Bigby, bringing him back to the Batcave.
  • The Antagonist: While Batman and Bigby clash, a series of bombings targets Gotham's libraries ahead of a literary festival. The plot involves a villainous cult of criminals using code-names of famous authors, led by a mysterious figure seeking a powerful book from the Fables world.
  • Canon Status: Writer Bill Willingham stated that the series is canon for Fables, set approximately one year after the events of The Black Forest (Fables #151–#162). Its status in the main DC Universe continuity remains undecided.
  • Format: The issue is 32 pages and intended for Mature Readers.
  • Collected Edition: The entire six-issue run is collected in a trade paperback, Batman Vs. Bigby! A Wolf In Gotham, released in May 2022.
