Plot Summary

The story unfolds under a dark shadow: Doctor Doom is actively monitoring events in California because he is being blackmailed by a mysterious man claiming to be his biological son.

Meanwhile, the main narrative centers on Dazzler, whose life is in absolute shambles. After being publicly exposed as a mutant, her mainstream pop-singing career has evaporated, and she is a primary target of rising anti-mutant hysteria. Trying to lay low at a Hollywood party, she is approached by a shady talent scout who introduces her to his boss, Alexander Flynn. Flynn manipulates Dazzler into signing a highly restrictive contract to headline an "experimental underground theater".

At the same time, Beast arrives in Los Angeles to visit his old friend Wonder Man while taking a vacation from the Defenders. Hank and Wonder Man cross paths with Dazzler at a studio backlot party. When a rough, horse-faced mutant named Max Rocker aggressively makes advances toward Dazzler, Beast steps in to protect her.

The intervention explodes into violence, but a heavily stressed Dazzler suddenly snaps—betraying her friend Hank by publicly screaming at him to "stop acting like such a beast". Overwhelmed by anxiety, her light-generation powers flare violently out of control, and she flees into the night.

The Cliffhanger

The following morning, a deeply remorseful Beast reads about Dazzler's mysterious disappearance in the newspaper. Determined to save her, he tracks down Max Rocker and beats the location out of him. Hank follows the trail to a dilapidated coastal building known as the Heartbreak Hotel, which serves as a refuge for mutant misfits. Beast breaks inside and finds Dazzler trapped prone on a bed, completely enveloped in an uncontrollable, chaotic cocoon of her own blinding light energy. He pulls her into his arms, promising that he will protect her.
