Black Adam – The Justice Society Files: Hawkman # 1, published on July 5, 2022, is a prestige-format one-shot that serves as an official prequel and tie-in to the 2022 Black Adam film. The 48-page issue introduces the cinematic versions of Hawkman and Adrianna Tomaz, exploring their place in the world before they encounter Black Adam.
The comic contains two distinct stories that bridge ancient history with modern-day superheroics:
-
Main Story ("Ghosts of the Past"): Long ago, Hawkman (Carter Hall) was the legendary leader of the Justice Society, but he now feels like a "relic in a museum". His life takes a dark turn when he is haunted by the vengeful spirit of James Craddock (Gentleman Ghost). Craddock creates twisted visions of a dark future, forcing Carter to confront his legacy and setting him on a path that will eventually lead to Black Adam.
-
Backup Story ("Lost & Found, Part 1 of 4"): The narrative begins in ancient Kahndaq, portraying a pivotal moment for Teth-Adam and his son Hurut. It then flashes forward to modern-day Kahndaq to introduce Adrianna Tomaz, an antiquities professor and "cultural recovery specialist". Adrianna unwittingly triggers trouble when she attempts to "liberate" a sacred totem from the criminal organization Intergang.
