Blackest Night # 1 published in July 2009 (cover date September 2009), is the first issue of an eight-part DC Comics event written by Geoff Johns with art by Ivan Reis. The story centers on the fulfillment of a prophecy where the dead rise as Black Lanterns to eliminate all life and emotion from the universe.

Core Storyline: "The Dead Shall Rise"

The premiere issue establishes a tone of cosmic horror on a day of national mourning for fallen superheroes.

  • The Prophecy: An ancient prophecy from the Book of Oa warns that when seven colored Lantern Corps go to war (the "War of Light"), a "Blackest Night" will descend.
  • The Catalyst: The villain Black Hand murders his family and commits suicide, only to be resurrected by the rogue Guardian Scar as the sentient embodiment of death. He breaks into Bruce Wayne’s grave and steals his skull to act as a tether for the Black Lantern Central Power Battery.
  • The Resurrection: Thousands of black power rings spread across the universe, reanimating deceased heroes and villains—including the Martian Manhunter, who confronts Hal Jordan and Barry Allen.
  • A Brutal Opening: The issue is famous for its visceral violence, specifically the shocking deaths of Hawkman and Hawkgirl, who are murdered by reanimated versions of their former teammates, Ralph and Sue Dibny.
  • Writer: Geoff Johns.
  • Artists: Ivan Reis (Pencils), Oclair Albert (Inks), and Alex Sinclair (Colors).
