Blackest Night: Titans #1, released on August 26, 2009, is the premier issue of a three-issue tie-in miniseries for DC Comics' massive Blackest Night crossover event. Written by J.T. Krul with detailed artwork by Ed Benes and Rob Hunter, the book highlights the horrifying impact of the Black Lantern invasion on the Titans family.

Core Plot & Narrative

The issue opens on "Heroes Day," a somber memorial event where the superhero community honors its fallen protectors. As the living Titans gather at Titans Island, arguments break out regarding which past members truly deserve to be remembered, particularly targeting those who previously betrayed the team.

Seeking space from the tension, the heroes quickly realize they are the primary targets of the resurrected dead. A horde of deceased, zombified former allies resurrected as Black Lanterns descends upon the island to harvest the hearts and emotions of the living team.

Key Character Confrontations

  • Beast Boy & Terra: Garfield Logan isolates himself to mourn. He is immediately targeted by the reanimated corpse of Terra (Tara Markov), who explicitly uses his lingering love for her as a psychological weapon to literalize the threat of ripping out his heart.
  • Hawk & Dove: The issue heavily focuses on the current Dove (Dawn Granger) and the newly revived Black Lantern Hawk (Hank Hall). Hank aggressively taunts Dawn, exploiting the memory of his deceased brother (Don Hall) to torment her emotionally while noting that he has no moral qualms about getting his hands dirty.
  • The Extended Titans Family: The issue sets up looming emotional attacks for the rest of the roster, including Lilith Clay showing up to terrorize the team, and a teaser that Donna Troy's deceased family members are next to arrive.
