Blue Beetle # 1 1986 titled "Out From The Ashes!", is the debut issue of Ted Kord's first ongoing series with DC Comics, which began in June 1986. The comic was written by Len Wein with art by Paris Cullins and Bruce Patterson.

The issue marks the return of Ted Kord's hero persona following the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, bringing the Charlton Comics character firmly into the main DC Universe.

  • The Return: After a period of retirement, Ted Kord suits up as the gadget-based hero Blue Beetle once more.
  • The Villain: His first case back is against an arsonist named Firefist (Lyle Byrnes), a new villain who targets firemen and firehouses after his own gruesome origin involving fire.
  • The Conflict: During their first encounter, Firefist manages to escape. When the Blue Beetle tracks him to Engine Company No. 41, a battle ensues within the burning building.
  • The Cliffhanger: Ted attempts to use an extinguisher to blind the villain but is ultimately trapped under rubble as the building burns around him, a literal "trial by fire" for his return to heroism.
  • Subplots: The issue also sets up a mystery surrounding the death of the previous Blue Beetle, Dan Garrett, and introduces the villain Conrad Carapax (the Indestructible Man) on Pago Island, hinting at a larger storyline.
  • Writer: Len Wein
  • Penciler: Paris Cullins
  • Inkers: Bruce D. Patterson
  • Characters: Ted Kord (Blue Beetle), Dan Garrett (flashback), Conrad Carapax (cameo appearance in armor), Firefist (Lyle Byrnes)
