Blue Beetle: Rebirth # 1 was published on August 24, 2016, serving as the launchpad for the DC Rebirth era of the character. It reintroduces Jaime Reyes with a new focus on his relationship with his predecessor, Ted Kord, and a mystical twist to his origin.
"Lost and Found"
The one-shot begins with Jaime Reyes feeling lost after the events of the "Convergence" storyline, which caused a four-year gap in his memory.
- The Mentor: Jaime has been seeking help from the brilliant scientist and former Blue Beetle, Ted Kord, to understand and remove the alien scarab grafted to his spine. Ted is excited about crime-fighting and serves as Jaime's self-appointed "quartermaster" and tactical support from his workshop.
- The First Fight: Ted calls Jaime to a coffee shop hostage situation where two villains, Rack and Ruin, are holding patrons hostage, specifically demanding the Blue Beetle. Jaime fights the villains while taking guidance from Ted, showcasing their new dynamic.
- The Mystical Twist: After the villains are defeated, the powerful sorcerer Doctor Fate appears. He delivers a dire warning to Ted Kord, revealing that the scarab is not, as previously thought, alien technology, but a dangerous magical artifact.
- The Mystery: The issue ends with the revelation that Rack and Ruin were hired by Brenda's aunt, a seemingly normal woman who is secretly the mastermind behind the attack, hinting at a larger mystery.
