Camelot 3000 # 1, released on October 20, 1982, is the landmark first issue of a 12-issue maxi-series created by writer Mike W. Barr and artist Brian Bolland. It is historically significant as DC Comics' first maxi-series and the first to be printed on high-quality Baxter paper instead of standard newsprint.

"The Past and Future King"

The story is set in the year 3000 AD on an overpopulated Earth facing a brutal alien invasion.

  • The Reawakening: A young man named Tom Prentice flees from an alien attack into a historical dig site under Glastonbury Tor. There, he accidentally opens the crypt of King Arthur Pendragon, who magically rises to defend him.
  • The Mission: Realizing the world is in peril, Arthur takes Tom on as his squire. They travel to Stonehenge, where Arthur calls forth Merlin.
  • Excalibur Returns: The Lady of the Lake attempts to give Arthur his sword, Excalibur, but it vanishes mid-air. It reappears inside the United Nations building, thrust up from the floor in a rock, waiting for the true king.
  • King Arthur: The legendary monarch reborn to save a futuristic Earth.
  • Tom Prentice: Arthur's modern-day squire (first appearance).
  • Merlin: Arthur's powerful advisor reawakened at Stonehenge.
  • Morgan Le Fay: The primary antagonist and Arthur's half-sister, who is revealed as the mastermind behind the alien invasion.
  • Sir Tristan: Reincarnated as a woman, introducing groundbreaking themes of gender identity to the series.
  • Creative Team: Written by Mike W. Barr and penciled/inked by Brian Bolland
